1. How do I join ASCE as a student?
Visit our JOIN page and follow the steps outlined. The most important thing is to fill out the membership form, pay dues, and show up at events!
2. What type of events does ASCE host?
We host professional events, social events, and service events! You can see examples of each of these on their respective pages on this website.
3. How do I get more involved in ASCE?
ASCE has a point system (with incentives) outlined on the JOIN page. This is a good way to gauge your involvement, the more points you have, the more involved you are. The way to earn points and be involved is to show up to events. You can also apply to join our board.
4. How do I know about upcoming events?
We have a shared google calendar on this website, newsletters are sent about weekly (need to be a registered member and on campusgroups), and our slack channel will notify you of events (see contact section for link to join).
5. What are the benefits of joining ASCE?
You will immediately gain a large network of other students in CEE at UIUC, and have the chance to bond at social events. Professional events will develop your career readiness, with resume workshops and info sessions with companies. Service projects will improve your connection to the wider community and will give you the ability to leave a lasting impact on the wider community.
6. What is the purpose of a network of CEE students?
Firstly we have a mentorship program for underclassmen to join (see mentorship tab), and they have the chance to learn important things from upperclassmen, such as how to apply for jobs, what upper level classes are like, what things would they have done differently, etc etc etc. Having a network also makes your future easier, as you can always learn from others about their experiences in the industry, and potentially have them help you land a job with their company too.
7. What is it like to be on the board of ASCE?
The ASCE board runs the club here on campus, we organize events, run company and scholarship promotions, and ensure that all civil engineers on campus have a place to call home. There are various positions that can be obtained, see the "Meet the Board" tab under the home section.
8. How do I apply to be on the board?
Underclassmen are encouraged to apply. We take into consideration your involvement so far, your time management / leadership skills, and your passion for making ASCE better. The applications come out around October, so be on the lookout with the newsletter or at meetings when it is announced.
9. What is conference/symposium?
Every year in the spring, students across the midwest from various universities come together at one of the universities to compete in events such as concrete canoe, steel bridge, and other similar competitions. See the "Conference" tab, we are hosting in Spring 2022 so there is a whole website set up just for it.
